Winklevoss Group Files Zcash ETF Plan, Proposes WINK Ticker

The filing comes 13 years after the Winklevoss twins' 2017 U.S. spot bitcoin ETF rejection due to concerns about market manipulation.

Zcash

Winklevoss Asset Services has filed a proposal with the United States SEC to establish a spot Zcash ETF. The fund would directly hold Zcash (ZEC), enabling investors to gain exposure to the asset without the need to purchase or store it themselves.

According to the initial registration statement, shares of the ETF would be traded on Nasdaq under the proposed ticker symbol WINK, pending regulatory approval and the finalization of the registration statement.

ZEC experienced a slight positive reaction to the news, rising by 2.2%. As of this writing, the token is trading at $1,362.15.

Winklevoss Group Eyes Spot ZEC ETF Listing

The proposed fund will charge an annual fee of 0.25% for sponsors, offering an easy way for investors to obtain Zcash (ZEC). Rather than requiring shareholders to buy coins, set up wallets, and manage private keys, the trust will hold Zcash directly on their behalf.

Gemini Trust Company, an affiliate of the sponsor, will serve as the custodian. The company will ensure the fund’s ZEC is kept safe for shareholders. Shares can be created or redeemed through authorized participants using either ZEC or cash. This allows the fund to operate within traditional market systems.

Meanwhile, Winklevoss Capital Fund has expressed interest in purchasing up to $100 million of shares. However, this interest is not a binding commitment.

Notably, this filing comes 13 years after the Winklevoss twins submitted their application for the first U.S. spot bitcoin ETF. Notably, the proposal was rejected by the SEC in 2017 due to concerns about potential bitcoin price manipulation.sh

Security Questions Remain Central To Zcash’s Investment Case

The filing does not classify Zcash as a safe investment and warns about potential serious issues. ZEC is highly volatile, and the crypto market can experience sharp price fluctuations that may quickly impact an investor’s portfolio. Additionally, the trust could encounter problems such as technological failures, regulatory actions, and market disruptions. It could also face challenges related to the Zcash network itself.

However, this situation gives the proposed WINK ETF an advantage over other crypto products seeking regulatory approval. If approved, it would provide a simpler way for investors to access Zcash while acknowledging the risks associated with its privacy features and uncertain regulations.

Meanwhile, for the Winklevoss Group, the filing serves as a strategy to integrate one of the most privacy-focused digital assets into mainstream finance. Ultimately, whether investors seize this opportunity will depend on Zcash’s price, technology, regulatory status, and ongoing relevance in the market.
